Opira Morise Kato - Gender based violence

about

Scandal Studios - Ugandan Recordings

Opira sings in Acholi-language and plays on a traditional Ugandan instrument called 'Adungu'. He made this acoustic instrument into an electrical one. With some built-in pickups (out of an old radio) powered by batteries and two Sony HiFi speakers, he is good to go!

Opira Morise Kato: “Gender based violence (GBV) is disturbing our homes so much, especially here in the villages. I see many men quarrelling and fighting with women. This song is about the problems inside our homes.

I think one of the causes of GBV is alcohol abuse. Many men drink as much as they can and don’t understand a single word anymore. In this state they might easily start a fight without understanding why. Another cause of GBV is that some men bring many different women to their home: more wives at home equals more problems. It also increases the risk of being infected with HIV/AIDS, which is disturbing many people here. One consequence of GBV is that you find many street children roaming around town, due to violence or because they don’t have parents to take care of them. People should stop fighting each other, because you might even accidentally kill your wife.”
