about

Scandal Studios - Ugandan Recordings

The Canadian/Dutch band 'Alexander McKenzie & the Underpaid' (consisting of Lori McKenzie, Ingmar Spaaij and Evert Aalten) perform their song ‘Muddy Waters’ together with the Opete church choir in Kitgum.

Lori McKenzie: "The name of my hometown of Winnipeg, Canada means 'muddy waters' in Cree, an indigenous language there. Long before the Europeans came, it was a trading post and meeting place at the convergence of two large, muddy rivers: the Red and the Assiniboine. The song is about the different roles I have in Canada in relation to people around me versus who I am here in Europe. When in Canada I am a daughter, a sister and a long-lost friend, and it sometimes feels as though I've left them behind me. Here I'm none of these, I'm just myself. I imagine the daughter, the sister and the long-lost friend all sleeping in the ocean, waiting for me to pick them up and take them with me when I travel back to Canada."
